Video of the Day [3.26.2009]

Today's video is a short collection of Fawlty Towers bloopers. If you've never seen it, Fawlty Towers, you're missing out. The show, which starred John Cleese, centered around Basil and Sybil Fawlty, as well as their employees Polly and Manuel. Basil, while trying to run the hotel properly, is often very unlucky at everything he tries to do, whether it be trying to impress a VIP or keeping quiet about the war (wink!). Filled with an even balance of physical and verbal comedy, this show is definitely worth watching. In fact, this was the first series I put onto my iPod when I got it up and running.

Okay, today's video was going to be a Bonzo Dog video called "Equestrian Statue", however, the video has been removed due to copyright claims. Instead, I'll show a Rutland Weekend Television video, featuring Neil Innes and Eric Idle. Innes, a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band, and Idle, a member of Monty Python, teamed up after the Python television days were over and formed The Rutles. This song is an a capella number performed by Innes and Idle about the closing of their show.

Today's video comes from, what appears to be, late 80s, early 90s. This video, Safe Sex, features the comic duo of Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, along with Dawn French and Rowan Atkinson. I think it's for an AIDS benefit/fundraiser type thing [take a look at the banner on the stage], but it's truly funny. Slightly NSFW because of an occasional f-bomb and, of course, the word sex.

Today's video is a short film starring David Tennant and Kate Ashfield* entitled SweetNightGoodHeart. Tennant, who is trying to end his relationship with Ashfield is met with a plethora of surprises as the night goes on. Around ten minutes, it's quite good, but there is some strong language, so not completely safe for work. Enjoy anyway!

Whoops! I haven't had computer access for a bit, so today's video is going up quite late. Terribly sorry!

Anyway, today's video features Flight of the Conchords costar, Rhys Darby [Murray Hewitt] performing a stand-up show. It's a short video today, under two minutes, but never fails to make me smile.

Today's video is a little jumpback to the past. Featuring Rowan Atkinson [BlackAdder, Mr Bean], this video is comedy the way I think it should be. Funny without being crude.

Franz Ferdinand performing at this year's Comic Relief Special. Featuring an introduction by The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding and a special guest joins the band near the end of the performance. You'll have to watch to find out who the guest is!

Jacques Brel, a French singer of Flemish descent was somebody I discovered by accident. This was, by far, one of the happiest accidents I've seen. Brel's work has been translated and adapted into English cover songs by many artists, including David Bowie. This song, Amsterdam, is one of those songs. This live performance of Amsterdam is one of the songs that he sings with such passion, it is truly moving. I'll post more of his songs as time goes on, but I thought I'd start with this.
